When the kids leave the nest, we can fly somewhere else

My wife and I are building architects.

We have our own company, and we work on six or eight different projects each year. We started the architecture firm in 2002, when my wife and I had our first child. We needed something with flexibility, and starting our own business seemed like the perfect idea. Now our son is graduating from high school, and he doesn’t need us much anymore. He attends college close to the house. He stays there to water the plants, mow the lawn, and gather the mail. That means we can take on bigger projects at work This past year, my wife and I worked on a museum in the city. We decided to rent a monthly furnished apartment instead of driving back and forth every day. It was an hour to the location, but we found a monthly furnished rental a few minutes away. My wife and I were happy that the monthly furnished rental allowed us to take pets. They didn’t even charge much for the pet deposit. My wife and I took both of our pitbulls to the monthly furnished rental, so they wouldn’t be home alone during the eighth months. Even though our son was at home, he was going to be busy with school and friends. The monthly furnished rental worked out really well for those eight months, and we were all very comfortable. Josh even came to visit once a month, so we could have dinner and see a play. Next year, we might take a three month job in the islands. That would be a lot of fun.
