A few days ago, I got the biggest laugh from our four year old daughter. Somebody had mentioned “mini-split” in her presence and our daughter, who loves dressing up, readily assumed that it had to do with clothing. Excitedly, she asked if I’d buy her a mini split skirt. When I asked why, she told me she just heard that mini-splits are the rage and she didn’t want to recognize left out. Then, she told me she wanted her mini skirt to have multiple splits – one on either side! After I had managed to stop laughing, I explained to her that “mini split” had to do with Heating and A/C – not fashion. The “split” I told her, referred to the fact that half of the system is installed inside, and the other is outside. The outside portion is a condenser or compressor, I continued to explain, while the inner portion was the air handler. She had lost interest by the time I began telling her about how it supported zone control. I knew she was out when I said that each room had its own control unit, which helps to save energy. Then I took her hand and led her over to our own mini split Heating and Air Conditioning unit. She seemed somewhat enlightened by the current information but observed that ‘mini split’ was a rather ridiculous name for a machine. When I asked what name she would give to our cooling/heating unit, she responded: “the A/C!”. She could have a point!
