Bob Dylan is one of the greatest musicians who has ever lived. He has been a worldwide superstar for decades, because of his unique abilities as a guitarist, poet, singer and songwriter. While many people know all sorts of facts and trivia about Bob Dylan, I know something most of them do not. Bob Dylan hates air conditioning. It’s true! How do I know this? Well, several years ago, my rock band was allowed to perform with Bob Dylan on his tour of the Southeast. We played just before he and his own band took the stage in a beautiful, 2,500-seat theater. While wandering around backstage before the show, I cautiously peeked into his dressing room. He was not inside, but I immediately noticed it was very humid and stuffy. My own band’s dressing room was quite comfortable in comparison. That’s when I saw that someone had used pieces of cardboard and duct tape to carefully cover all the HVAC vents in Dylan’s room. Clearly, an effort had been made to guarantee that no cool air made it into that space. I asked Bob’s bandmates about this, and they confirmed that Dylan was somewhat superstitious about air conditioning. They said he believed the artificially cool air would affect his vocal cords negatively and make it more difficult for him to sing well during concerts. For that reason, whenever he went out on the road, he always demanded that no air conditioning be used in his dressing room, his hotel rooms or on his fancy tour bus. I bet you didn’t know that!
