A few days ago, I got back from a fantastic trip down to South America… I spent about two weeks down there touring to several countries & seeing all the sights I could. But of course, it would really take a whole lifetime to see everything there is to see in that vast area of land, but I did what I could with the time that I had. It is a completely different way of life down there from what we are used to up here.
We love our fast food, air conditioned homes, & making life as laid back as possible! Down there it is exactly the opposite. A lot of people raise small numbers of livestock just to feed their family & maybe sell a bit to their neighbors. They live off the land & are more at one with nature than we tend to be. There are no air conditioners or gas heating systems in their homes. They do have fireplaces & you can find some table or box fans lying about, but there is the impression that they are intertwined with their environment in such a way that they are used to the climate.
Initially, I thought I was going to die of heat stroke when I stayed in some of the smaller villages. The city tends to be more modernized & you can find a room with an air conditioner there. In the towns & villages, they are practically non-existent. In time you do get used to it though. I didn’t even notice the lack of air conditioning after a couple weeks.
