When I was younger, my parents had some fairly unorthodox ways to beat the heat while in the summer. I grew up in the deep south mind you, so it wasn’t as if the three of us were just trying to find some shade on an eighty-degree day. More often than not, the lot of us were seeking shelter from hundred-degree weather and scorching sunshine that would burn your skin in less than fifteen minutes! One of my Mom’s favored methods for cooling us all down was a trip to the local ice cream parlor. However the people I was with and I all loved going simply because it was a opening to get some ice cream, yet I also realized why my Mom liked going to the parlor so much… While other little fast food joints, pizzerias and shops would have a moderate temperature set on their control units, the ice cream parlor was always kept cold! I remember seeing an outdated dial control component on the wall in this parlor, and observing the needle of the dial at sixty-5 degrees… Combined with a scoop of ice cream, the excellent AC in the parlor ensured the air quality was unbeatable and that anyone would hastily cool down after stepping in from the heat outside. But for a while, my Mom even convinced my other mom to join us, but she passionately hates being too cold! Unlike the rest of us, she prefers the southern heat and fully embraces it. While she may have always favor a warm day in July to a frigid day in January, even she has her limits for how warm she is willing to be from the weather. Anyway, with the entire family present, our trips to the ice cream parlor every couple afternoons were a real treat for me as I grew up! Now as an adult with kids of my own, I suppose I might try to recreate that tradition and bring my Moms along for the trip!
