My husband and I have been arguing for weeks over what type of heating and cooling we want in our home. I tend to get really cold in the winters, which makes up most of our year. I would really like to install radiant heated floors for a number of reasons. First of all, I have heard great things from my family and friends. Radiant heated floors are silent and operate efficiently. We would save money on energy bills and we would always be comfortable during the cold months. The hot air rises and there is very little maintenance required since no dust can get trapped in the unit being that it is in the floor. However, my husband has two hesitations. He does not want to go through the trouble of tearing up our floorboards just to replace the heating. He said it would be more trouble than it’s worth. On top of that, my husband gets warm very easily and feels that he does not need radiant floor heating. He wants to install an HVAC unit that gives us both heating and cooling. I don’t think that’s necessary given that our summers are short lived. I feel like we would be more than comfortable with relying on window units for cool air in the two hot months of the year. Unfortunately for us, we are both stubborn people. I am trying to compromise and meet in the middle, but I am very disappointed that I have to let go of the idea of radiant heated floors. However, I have heard good things about split duct systems. At least we would be able to set different rooms to different temperature settings. That way, I could at least keep some rooms a little warmer and more comfortable for me.
