During the last few weeks, I’ve heard a strange sound in the ductwork above my bathroom.
At first, the noise was faint and subtle.
I only heard the strange sound in the middle of the night. Yesterday, I started hearing the strange faint sounds during the day as well. My husband has been out of town on business for the past 3 months, so I can’t have him check on the problem. I wasn’t going to pay a contractor to come out and look at the ductwork, but I was afraid that an animal was stuck in the attic. One of my coworkers got me worried when they told me that an exterminator found a litter of kittens in her attic ductwork. I doubt it highly that the problem was a litter of kittens or puppies, but the noise wasn’t going away. I contacted the HVAC company first, and they gave me an appointment for the next day. On Tuesday, the HVAC technician came over to check on the problem. He removed the wall board from our attic entrance and carefully climbed into the ceiling. He was gone for 20 or 30 minutes, before I saw his face again. He came down the stairs and grabbed some additional tools. He gave me no further information at that time. He was gone in the attic for another thirty minutes. When he finally came back, he was carrying two small pieces of sheet metal. The HVAC technician told me that the ducting metal was loose, and it was rubbing together every time the HVAC unit was on. That was the source of my strange sound.
