Sometimes the only thing worse than something being broken is something not really working up to par. If the thing is genuinely broken, or simply isn’t available, you can accept the fact that it isn’t there. But if something is there and it’s just bad, doesn’t work as it should, or what have you, it’s an even greater disappointment because you expected it to work and it didn’t live up to your expectations. That just about sums up my association with the only taxi driver in our town’s vehicle and his banged up air conditioner. Since I live in a southern region, air conditioning in a motorcar can be a lovely respite from the heat outside. Unfortunately his vehicle’s a/c doesn’t work, or, rather, it doesn’t work well, and he’s using that as an excuse to not get it repaired. If you hold your hand directly against the a/c vents, you might be able to feel a small draft of air coming out, which he considers to be the a/c really working adequately. And I can assure you that that is not how an a/c that is really working just fantastic should act! But, since air hasn’t stopped coming out of it entirely, he is stubborn and refuses to believe that it is broken. My wife and I share a vehicle, so when she’s out I have to use this taxicab service to get around when I have essential errands to run. Also, I mention the air conditioner every single time. Every time! I can’t wait for the day when his car’s a/c finally breaks down all the way so he’ll have to stop denying its defectiveness. And, since he’s ignored the complication for so long, I secretly hope it costs him extra to get it fixed thanks to the complication getting so out of hand.
