When I graduated from high school, I had no idea what to do from there.
Like many recent graduates, I was struggling just to figure out if I even had a place in the world, let alone where that place would be.
I tried a few different careers, including retail, warehouse operations, and even working as a lifeguard and swim coach! Nothing really stuck though, as the work just wasn’t interesting enough to me. So in time, I began to explore trade skills. That’s when I stumbled upon HVAC maintenance and repair, and I fell in love overnight. This was just the field I was hoping to find! Something where I could work with my hands, touch a new project each day, and work with new colleagues sounded like a wonderful change of scenery. So, I began studying the principles of heating and air conditioning maintenance, and started practicing my new skills on my own HVAC system. I first tried working on the furnace in my basement, so I opened up the furnace to get to the firebox and clear out all the dust and dirt. I also cleaned the burners to prevent them from being stopped up. After reassembling the furnace, I went outside to inspect the A/C unit. After disassembling the A/C unit, I cleaned and lubricated several moving parts inside the unit, and also checked the refrigerant line for clogs. Once I knew everything looked clear, I reassembled the unit, and that was that. I love having this skill set – I can see why being in the HVAC industry is lucrative right now.
