I knew it was going to be a difficult process, when I started looking to import a JDM vehicle for my husband. We don’t have any JDM car importers close to our home residence, so that was the first problem. Even when I found a JDM importer in our state, they were three hours away. My husband and I agreed to set up a Skype meeting with the JDM importer. We spoke for 30 minutes, and he explained the process. He told us about the 25-year exemption Rule and how it pertains to our specific request. My husband really wanted an R33 Skyline, and they can range between $15,000 and $20,000. The JDM car importer fees wer 20% of the cost of the R33 Skyline. We had to pay a hefty Penny to import the vehicle and handle all of the Customs paperwork. Before the JDM car importer would even search for vehicles on our behalf, he required a $5,000 deposit. My husband and I did not expect such a huge deposit, and we decided to take some time to think about the purchase. After researching the process to import an R33 Skyline, my husband and I realized the deposit is a normal part of the business. We met with the JDM car importer again and gave them the $5,000 deposit. We are still waiting to hear from the car importer, but it’s only been a couple of days. The guy told us not to worry, because he would find exactly what we wanted. We’re excited to see what he finds.
