I never realized just how insanely drafty one of my apartments was until I lived through my life’s first polar vortex. A polar vortex is this weather phenomena that happens every few years, every so often up north; it’s basically a costly term for a front of particularly frigid air, usually caused by high winds. The last one which I lived through plummeted parts of the country to minus 55 degrees. That’s 55 degrees freaking below zero! While it didn’t happen quite that bad where I lived–we were thankfully spared with a mere 28 degrees below zero–we had all of our own additional problems because of it. The areas that were hit with less frigid air resulted in an ice storm. It wasn’t until it got that frigid that I finally realized just how drafty my home was. The temperature control in our place was set at 60, however the temperature read 50. The entire electric oil furnace was cycling constantly; it was never shutting off for even a moment! I walked around, as well as sure enough every window was leaking in plenty of frigid air, even locked! But it wasn’t the sides enjoy I was used to, it was the very bottom where the gasket was. Clearly, it needed to be replaced a while back. But I couldn’t leave the home due to the storm to get plastic to cover it. What I eventually ended up doing was getting every towel in the house, rolling them up way tight, as well as shoving them all along the window sills. It looked ridiculous, however, it still worked. Two hours later, the home was heated as well as I heard the central electric furnace method finally clicked off. I had no clue before that those modern-looking windows could lose so much heat!
