I’m fine with my house

My partner and I just inherited the home of our dreams. We started dating when were young, and we would spend a lot of time at his father’s condo on the lake. My husband’s parents divorced at a young age, so he would spend most of his weekdays with his father and weekends with his mother. Now that his father is moving into a retirement living community, the property has been passed down to us, and we’re thrilled. But we’re also a little intimidated. We had only been to the home for parties and events since we both work a lot, so neither of us had any idea of what had been done to the home at its core. It turns out that ever since my husband moved out and married me, almost nothing had been done. The attic still wasn’t fully converted into a bedroom, even though the walls were all there and the windows and insulation were finished. His father still hadn’t finished installing the A/C system to connect the room to the rest of the house. While the wood burning stove had been maintained and was in fantastic working order, the HVAC unit itself hadn’t been cleaned or consistently serviced in ages. We suspect that was because my father-in-law hadn’t been using at all. He had been heating the house with the wood burning stove only because he was too much of a tightwad to go out and buy oil. Instead, he was chopping wood and just seasoning it himself before winter every year. It’s going to take a lot of labor to get this house to match our dream home vision. We’ll start with hiring a local furnace company to get the oil furnace up and running before winter comes.
