I was gently complaining to the acquaintance across the street about our grossly high-priced utility bill. He is so nice, almost paternal in fact. My acquaintance listened as I went on about how I needed to figure out how to lower our energy bills. Normally, he is the sort who placates and smiles. But this time, it was different. My acquaintance recommended I sync up our HVAC. I nodded while explaining how I thought a modern smart climate control component would help. He smiled again however shook his head. His method of syncing the HVAC went far deeper. The method is to bring together all the elements of a home with the HVAC plan in mind. First, secure the envelope. This is a valuable way of saying seal all the cracks, windows and doors to keep the treated air in. And while we’re sealing, he said the next target was to close all the gaps in the duct system. A home can lose up to 30 percent of treated air through leaky ducts. Next, he recommended I spend money some attention to the attic. I would need to seal around the perimeter and make sure I have plenty of R 60 insulation. I could now see what he meant by syncing the HVAC and our house. Wow, I had not expected this response but, he is so right. If I’m gonna cry about the utility bill, then I better be prepared to do what I have to do to proper it. After I got into syncing the home with our HVAC, I felt a bunch better about the prospect of cutting a chunk off the electric bill. Realistically, I am planning on something around a 15 percent savings on our next utility bill.
