Last Winter season, our spouse & children continually complained of headaches, sore throat, & even nausea. My kids missed quite a bit of school, & our spouse was regularly coughing & sneezing. I purchased tons of red juice, fed them vitamins, & even scheduled a checkup for our family with a local nurse. It wasn’t until I noticed an abundance of airborne dust, a slight musty smell & higher than normal energy costs that I started suspecting the oil furnace was to blame. I am conscientious about annual service of the heating equipment. Every fall, I hire a licensed Heating, Ventilation, & A/C professional to complete a thorough inspection, cleaning & tuneup. I was not excited to guess that the oil furnace was negatively impacting indoor air conditions & responsible for our health problems. I called our regular Heating, Ventilation, & A/C contractor & asked him check out the oil furnace. He discovered that the complication was the duct system. In the twelve years we’d lived in the house, I’d never even considered having the air duct took care of. Since our heated air passes through the branching network of pipes multiple times per morning, it directly impacts our comfort & the cleanliness of the house. Every time the oil furnace starts up, any contaminants within the ducts can become airborne & introduced into the breath air. The inspection of the air duct revealed an scary buildup of bacteria & debris, including a dead mouse & mold growth. The cleaning process took a little over an fifth & caused no mess or injure to the home. The improvement in comfort, smell & cleanliness of the cabin was immediate, & our heating bills are significantly lower.
