This month has been a nightmare at my house. My roommate and I lease from a property management company. In a lot of ways, the company is very efficient and helpful when it comes to a problem. There are benefits to leasing from a company, rather than leasing from a private owner. For example, companies tend to have more resources than a private owner would. In our case, we have easy online payments and maintenance requests, as well as a quick response time for any services or repairs we need. Suddenly, we had a drastic increase in the amount of services and repairs we needed. It seemed like the house was coming apart. The worst part was that we have been having issues with the furnace. Given that it is the winter, it’s been extremely uncomfortable for us to live without heat. Even under layers of blankets, we need heating to counter the freezing temperatures and snowy weather. At first, we tried to fix the furnace ourselves. We went downstairs and saw that there was a simple error code. After doing the necessary research to find out the meaning of the code, I was still unable to figure out how to fix it. We put in a maintenance request and someone came to the house the next day. He reset the furnace and our heat was back on–but not for long. Two days later, we were back to having no heat! We put in a second maintenance request and had to wait another day for someone to come back. Finally, he addressed the original error code, rather than simply resetting the system. We are hoping that this time the repair actually sticks! I’m glad we were able to get help from the company, but a private owner may be more in touch with the way a property functions and could catch the fix on the first visit.
