I didn’t know that having drapes or curtains benefits your home’s HVAC performance

Nor was it the case of having an air conditioner of insufficient size to match the square footage of my house.

There is still so much I have left to learn as a first time homeowner. I thought I would simply have a lawn to mow, garbage cans to take to the curb once a week, and weeds to pull around the landscaping in our yard. Unfortunately, my assumptions were unbelievably far from the truth. The house had plumbing issues from the start, totalling in nearly $1,000 worth of repairs in a four week period before the fifth plumber finally resolved the issue. Then I had my homeowner’s association banging on my door about painting my house a different color. The seller never mentioned any ongoing disputes with the HOA, but the board members insist otherwise. While my attorney sorts out the legal issues, I’m now in here trying to figure out why my air conditioner is struggling so much throughout the afternoons. I had several HVAC technicians inspect my system, but they all assured me that nothing was malfunctioning. Nor was it the case of having an air conditioner of insufficient size to match the square footage of my house. Finally, one of them realized that I had so many windows on the west side of the house with essentially no blinds or curtains. So much sunlight was coming through in the afternoon that it was raising the temperature inside my house considerably. By investing in thermal curtains, I finally managed to get my air conditioner to cycle normally, and have managed to retain some of the cool air that I was losing through many of my windows. It only cost me $50 in total to buy a few sets of these curtains at Walmart.
