I recently invested in a smart thermostat for my home.
For the past twenty years, I’d been managing temperature control with a manual thermostat.
This plastic unit required me to walk to the living room and physically turn the dial. While it was always reliable, the thermostat didn’t provide precision control. I found it difficult to remember to adjust the temperature before I left for work in the morning. Most often, I ended up heating or cooling an empty house all day long. If I remembered to raise or lower the thermostat before leaving, I’d then return home to either an overheated or freezing cold house. Upgrading to a smart thermostat has saved me a tremendous amount of money on my monthly energy bills. It’s also added a great deal of convenience. I’m able to access the thermostat through a user-friendly app on my smartphone. No matter where I am, I can check in on the furnace and air conditioner and make changes to operation. The thermostat tracks energy usage, showing where I could make improvements for further cost savings. Plus, I get reminded when it’s time to change the air filter or schedule professional maintenance. If there’s a sudden temperature fluctuation or concern, the wifi thermostat sends me a notification and also alerts my HVAC contractor. Most often, these issues can be resolved through remote diagnosis. I like it that the smart thermostat features geofencing. This means that it knows the location of my cell phone. It adjusts temperature based on where I am, conserving energy and yet welcoming home to ideal comfort.
