My bestie, Stephen, loves to go camping. He consistently tries to convince me to go along with him. He’s happy to spend a month in the woods, sleeping in a tent, cooking over a fire, plus fishing for his breakfast. I like to have access to new amenities. I rely on my latte maker, microwave, internet and temperature control. I like my bed, my shower, toilet, cable, furnace and a/c unit. When I take a trip, I look forward to a comfortable hotel room with room service plus a heated pool. Stephen promised he would rent a lodge for our first camping trip together. He assured me there would be real toilets and temperature control. We packed up the car with supplies and drove hours to a little lodge in the woods. Since this was at the end of October, the days were still quite warm, but the mornings were getting seriously freezing. As soon as I stepped inside the lodge, I searched for the temperature control. Unfortunately, there was no dial to turn or button to push to enjoy an oil furnace. There was only a wood burning fireplace for warmth. Instead of adjusting the temperature control, Stephen and I needed to chop wood and drag it inside. It took us forever to gather enough wood to build a sufficient fire. After that I had trouble getting it started. The wood was dirty plus created a filthy mess. The fire filled the lodge with the stink of smoke, and we had to huddle right up near it to keep warm.
