We live in a home that was built in the late 1800’s. If you can believe it, we really love having this old of a home. It has certain characteristics that you would never be able to find, or ever recreate, in a new modern home. Some of these are charming and endearing, others, not so much. There is a warmth and welcoming feel to the house when you are in the room where the fireplace is. When you are in the back bedrooms it is cold and drafty during the winter and no matter how many blankets we put on the bed, it is still cold. I end up putting on heavy socks just to try and keep my feet from hurting in the winter. They are so cold, at times, that I can’t even feel my toes. We finally broke down and purchased heated mattress pads for each of the beds. The HVAC system does have vents in the bedrooms but can’t seem to keep up with the drafts. We have had the foundation looked at to try and find solutions but with the house being as old as it is there is only so much that can be done. Living in older homes had many advantages and disadvantages. We would never want to live in a brand new home that doesn’t have any personality of its own. All we can do is make sure that we have a quality HVAC system that runs efficiently and deal with some of the quirks that our home has in the best way possible. Buying those heated mattress pads for the beds has certainly made it more comfortable.
