When we had to evacuate due to flooding I made sure to take all of my pets.
Much to my sister’s chagrin, this included all 12 of my pet tarantulas.
She doesn’t like my spider pets very much but I couldn’t leave them behind to drown now could I? Thankfully my sister was understanding and let me take the tarantulas to her house. She didn’t have a shelf for me to put my pets on, like I have at home, so I had to put their tanks all on the floor in the living room. Shortly after my arrival we went out to dinner. When we got home my sister was the first to notice that my tarantulas were running around like crazy in their tanks. It was freaking her out. This is very unusual behavior. It is exceptionally unusual for all 12 of the tarantulas to be doing it at the same time. But it wasn’t long before I figured out the cause. It turns out that my sister has underfloor heating. My spiders were getting very warm on the heated floor while we were having dinner. Being cold blooded animals, they get extra active when it is warm. So I moved the spiders off of the heated floor and onto the kitchen table. They all settled back down in a few hours. I better go out and get a new shelf system for the spiders though. I don’t think my sister will like them living on the kitchen table for a few days and I don’t want to put them back down on the heated floors either. Hopefully we can go home soon.
