Before taking a vacation, I do a ton of research. I read reviews and travel guides, look at pictures, and plan every last detail. I want to be sure that everything goes smoothly and that we maximize our enjoyment. Last summer, my husband and I took two weeks off from work to tour the southern part of the country. I meticulously arranged our itinerary and pre-booked each hotel along the way. We spent the entire first day driving. We wanted to make it as far south as possible. As we traveled, the outside air temperature steadily climbed. We switched from rolling the windows down to blasting the air conditioner. Even with the air conditioner turned up to maximum capacity, the interior of the car still felt a bit hot and sticky. We were exhausted and sweaty by the time we arrived at our hotel. We’d driven until midnight and were anxious to check into our room, take advantage of the air conditioning and crawl into a comfortable bed. The minute we dropped our bags in our room, I adjusted the cooling unit to the highest setting. It made an alarming screeching sound and filled the room with a very unpleasant smell. The air coming from the vents was warm. We waited for twenty minutes, but the air conditioner never managed any cool air. We finally contacted the front desk and asked to be moved to a new room. After packing up, riding the elevator and finding the new room, I once again fiddled with the air conditioner. It barely worked and we spent a very uncomfortable night. After all my research and planning, dealing with air conditioner issues ruined the first night of our trip.
