I’ve always wanted a cabin on the lake. I didn’t even much care what lake, I just wanted something remote, placid, and peaceful. I wanted a place with a deck that looked out over the water. This all goes back to my summer vacation when I was ten, and the few glorious weeks I got to spend with my friend and his parents at their ritzy lakehouse. I surely don’t need something as big or fancy as they had, I just want a little spot to call my own. I finally got my shot, but the place is a bit of a fixer-upper. It needs not only a new air conditioner but a furnace as well, and I am almost 100% certain that most of the ductwork will need to be removed as well. I have gotten price estimates from three different HVAC contractors around here, and they are all pretty close to one another. I really don’t want to spend 5 grand on a new heating and cooling system, so I am looking at my other options. The heating aspect is very easy to figure out, because a couple of decent space heaters will be enough to heat up the entire cabin because it isn’t very big. The cooling is a tougher nut to crack because I really hate how noisy those window mounted box AC units can be. I will do some comparison shopping and look for what other portable or non-centralized air conditioners are like, and try and figure out a way to avoid central HVAC entirely.
