My husband has been trying for weeks to figure out a way to repay our neighbor for his kindness. The reason it is so difficult is that he is older basically has everything he needs, hates to eat out, and has no hobbies. If any of those were an option, we could get him a gift card, take him to dinner, or buy him something he needs. You see, he is always there with a tool to fix something, to check on the house when we are away, or to do just about anything we need. He even offered to take the car to the shop for me one day because he knew our son was sick. He is the nicest guy! But, back to our delima, we really wanted a way to help him out that he would appreciate. Last week I was talking with our neighbor’s son and he said something that may be the perfect answer for us. He said that his dad was having trouble with his furnace and he was going to call the HVAC dealer in town to get it looked at. I know it sounds like an unusual gift, but, I offered to take care of that for him. He agreed and I called the HVAC dealer that day. I arranged for them to call up our neighbor and tell him that he had “won” a free check up of his HVAC system. They went along with it and understood that we would be paying for the service. I also told them that, provided it wasn’t hundreds of dollars, we would cover the cost of minor repairs too. I then went and dropped of a thank you card for the technician to give to our neighbor once the service call was complete. We wanted him to know that it was a gift from us but we knew he would never accept it if he knew ahead of time.
